New Product Workshop

A fast, efficient way to navigate Stage Zero.

Companies easily know which new ideas are “on” (full-blown active development projects) and which ideas are “off” (no time being spent pursuing).  The challenge comes in appropriately managing the Concept-Stage investigation. The New Product Workshop filters out ideas that probably shouldn't go forward and organizes promising, aligned ideas into thin strategic decision packages.

More importantly, the Thickery framework gives your company a level-setting, objective, repeatable approach toward picking the which ideas should move forward.

Who HOSTS an NPW?  Any existing business with more new ideas than they can handle, or seeking a more disciplined approach to strategic new product decisions. Key Stakeholder are Business Development, Research & Development, New Ideas Committee, and/or Senior Management.

Target attendees: Cross-functional team members with at least some portion of their duties in new idea investigation and development.  Others across the organization wishing to gain an appreciation for the concept-stage screening process.

Requires upfront development:
  • Adjust and calibrate the Idea Filter to the most important metrics for the existing business.
  • Identify and prioritize which new ideas should be included.
  • Assemble the proper resources around each team.

Contact time:  2 and 1/2 days spread across 1-2 weeks with "homework" in-between.
Options:
  • Scalable: Ideally, NPW is held within one organization with several teams investigating several new ideas.  Alternative A:  Only one idea is being investigated by one team.  Alternative B: One team can investigate several ideas. This requires more hours per team member and/or spanning more weeks.
  • Privacy levels: An NPW can be held with different organizations attending the same event.  For example, hosted by a small business network or chamber of commerce.  Each team is investigating its own idea and has little cross-team-interaction. Nonetheless, decisions will need to be made upfront around attendance and the level of sharing desired.
