Technology Coach™ Workshop

Top reasons technologies are stunted in commercialization
and tools to attack those challenges.

"Getting stuff out of the Lab" is an easy philosophy around which to rally. Actually implementing technology commercialization is an extremely difficult, multi-year, culture-changing proposition. It affects everyone in the organizational and community ecosystems.  Many of the programs offered to educate and engage are too lecture-based, carry on across many weeks, are shy on tactical tools that can be immediately put to use, and fail to build a framework for long-term alignment.  Technology Coach was specifically designed as the perfect hybrid: a 6-hour introductory “lecture/hands-on/tool” for any group trying to increase their technology-commercialization acumen.

What's different? A simulated case study game provides hands-on feel for the actual difficulties associated with selecting winning ideas when much of the information is missing.

Output: An appreciation of why it is so difficult to pick a "winning idea" upfront, and a framework to make such decisions more objective and transparent.

Lecture content

A primer for organizing new ideas, spotting common problems in commercializing technologies, and guiding action-based next steps.

Simulation game

Groups are given a "consulting assignment" —a set of cards that contain a pool of technologies hoping to be commercialized, and form a simulation exercise around the core teaching elements.

Present & Discuss

Each team will present their recommendation on which technologies to avoid, which one(s) to commercialize, how they came to their decision, and how to mitigate the top challenges their particular technology will face in moving forward.
Attendees do not work on their own ideas but will reflect on any lessons the Simulation brings out.  Great program to provide a high-level appreciation and/or feed into subsequent workshops.  Clients can also gain value from the screening framework as real examples are shared among the staff over the next several years.

Who Hosts a Technology Coach workshop? R&D Departments, MBA programs, Professors, Community and economic development organizations, Tech-transfer offices, Training & Development groups... With no preparation by the host or attendees, Technology Coach is perfect as a stand-alone workshop or embedded into a larger curriculum or program that involves innovation management, technology commercialization, business development, concept-stage tools... Even broader usage into decision-making theory, group dynamic insights, or as a framework to build or enhance a new idea screening process.

Target attendee: Anyone wanting to know the basics of why new ideas are so difficult to implement, especially when based upon deep research.  Basic, introductory level. No preparation necessary.  Stand alone learning, or great starting point for entering into more serious idea thickening.

Contact time:  6-hours.
